How can iPhone Application Developers Get a Better Idea about Their Target Audience?

One of the first and foremost things to do before you develop an app is to know who your target users are. This is because it is easy to develop an app based on a great idea, but then that does not guarantee the success of the app on the App Store. For instance, think of an app which appeals to high-school students but is less likely to please corporate executives or homemakers.

Generally, what most of the iPhone application developers do is think of an idea and base their apps features and functions around that idea rather than focusing on a specific set of users; for them, the users come into focus only during the app promotion and marketing. But in my opinion, one of the best ways to go about developing your apps is to first focus on the audience first and create apps based on their needs.

In a nutshell, think “why” and “who” instead of “what” and “how” first.

Let us look at some of factors that will help you in assessing your target audience in a much better way.

Does Your Audience Need the App?

It is very easy to assume that the app developed by you will meet the needs of your target audience or whatever app you develop, is the app which the audience was waiting for. What the target users actually need is an app which instantly caters to their immediate requirements. A case in point is that of the business executives who prefer an app, which will help them in calculating taxes rather than a weather based app or a recipe app. If they are always on the go for business trips, they would prefer some travel based app and so on and so forth. So, you need to think accordingly.

What kind of apps does your audience use?

When you know what sort of apps your target users use, it makes the development of apps quite easy.

One thing is for sure that they use high-quality and feature rich apps. But this is a generalization; you have to delve into more specific details such as – what category of apps do they use more or what features are common to the apps which they use. For example, if your audience is a game lover that is composed of teenagers, you have to develop a game keeping their age and interest in mind.

Know the demographics

You need not rack your brains for this one; simply take a survey online or in person to know your target users’ demographics. Here are some of the things you must find out to know them better and then develop the apps according to their tastes. Take a look.

•    What is their average age?
•    Are they male/female/children?
•    Where do they reside?
•    What features do they like the most in a competitive app?
•    What are their occupations?
•    What are their interests and hobbies?

These were some of the sure shot ways to know about your target audience in-depth.  Use these tips and analyze the type of your target audience and their preferences and develop an app keeping them in mind. I am sure your apps will then sell like hot cakes on the iTunes Store.
